The life and death of the Bavarian fairy-tale king Ludwig II still remains a mystery. His legendary life is full of riddles and contradictions – but also romance and fantasy – and offers material for a touching yet extremely gripping musical – Ludwig². Costumes and backdrops, plot and music and the lighting and architecture of Ludwig’s Festival Theater fuse with the view of the real Neuschwanstein Castle to create a unique overall experience. Last August, 30,000 enthusiastic visitors celebrated the return of the king. Wonderful titles such as “Kalte Sterne”, “Rosenkavaliere” or “In Palästen geboren” make this musical one of the most beautiful and moving works of the genre.

Fans of the musical “Ludwig²” have every reason to rejoice: In the long term, successful production has found a home where it has always belonged: in Ludwigs Festspielhaus, one of the most beautiful theaters in Germany, embedded in a unique natural setting. After two great seasons, it is clear - until 2029, the curtain will continue to rise in Füssen for the fairy-tale king. Let yourself be enchanted by one of the most beautiful musicals of our time!

Costumes and backdrops, plot and music, the lighting and architecture of the theater, and the view of the castle and the mystic mountain world of the surrounding area merge into a work of art, the power of which is difficult to describe in words. It can only be experienced. Live!

King Ludwig II

“I want to remain an eternal mystery to myself and others”…

… once wrote the young King Ludwig II in a letter to his former educator Sybille Meilhaus. He has indeed succeeded in remaining a mystery.

From the local Schwangau chronicle:

On June 12, 1886, King Ludwig II was arrested at Neuschwanstein Castle. The citizens and fire brigade of Schwangau wanted to defend their king, but he himself called for peace and restraint.  The incapacitated man was taken on a secret journey to Schloss Berg. Guardians watched the king constantly because on June 12, he had protested violently against his transfer to Schloss Berg.

For reasons unknown, his watch stopped on the evening of June 13. At 6:45 p.m., the king and Dr. von Gudden left the castle for an evening walk. When they were still not back after 8:00 p.m., they were searched for in the castle park. At 11:00 pm, their bodies were found in the shallow water of a pond.

Even today, the people of Schwangau in particular – but, of course, also many admirers and fans worldwide – feel deeply connected to “their” king.

His castles are stone testimonies of a reclusive dreamer and idealist. Today they are magical attractions for visitors from all over the world.
